Shaun Edelstein was raised in South Africa attending the prestigious Stellenbosch University receiving Bachelors & Masters Degrees in Economics. Emigrating to the USA in 1996, Shaun quickly found a niche’ in Healthcare becoming the Executive Director of Surgical Specialty Associates, the largest multi-specialty surgical IPA in California with over 250 surgeons. In 2001 Shaun transitioned to the University of California San Diego, as Administrator for Surgical Services. In 2010 Shaun focused on the Renal Market, joining Balboa Nephrology Medical Group (BNMG) as Chief Operating and Financial Officer. BNMG is the 4th largest Nephrology practice in the USA with 53 providers and 4,250 ESRD patients.
Terry Behrend, M.D.
Chief Medical Officer
Terry Behrend is the Chief Medical Officer of Balboa Nephrology. Dr. Behrend’s clinical practice is focused on the care of patients with End Stage Renal Disease, with particular interest in using technology to drive efficiency, improve quality and provide value.
Dr. Behrend received his medical degree in 1994 from University of Michigan. He completed his nephrology training at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in 2000. In addition to being a Nephrologist, Dr. Behrend is also an Interventional Nephrologist where he performs thousands of vascular access procedures each year.
Outside of work, Dr. Behrend enjoys anything technology related, snowboarding, and college football.
Dylan Steer, M.D.
Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Steer received his medical degree in 1995 and completed his internal medicine training in 1998 at Duke University. He completed his nephrology and hypertension training at the University of California, San Diego in 2003. Dr. Steer has a particular interest in the care of patients with chronic kidney disease, including end-stage kidney disease and kidney transplantation. He sees patients in the office, hospital, and dialysis unit settings. Dr. Steer’s goal is to provide excellence in patient care by utilizing the most novel approaches with compassion and dedication. A native of Boston, Dr. Steer is proud to call San Diego home.
Outside of work, Dr. Steer enjoys sailing.
Senior Director of Operations
Faiza Solehdin is the Senior Director of Operations for Balboa United. Faiza has an extensive background in health care and has delivered sweeping impact as an operational problem solver for over a decade as manager, director, regional director and project manager. Faiza’s creative strategies for facility management have addressed the pain points of hospitals and healthcare businesses in improving the services and products delivered to patients and their families.
Faiza holds her Bachelor’s in Sociology, Master’s in Information Technology and Master’s in Business Administration.
In addition to her role at Balboa United, Faiza loves to read, listen to classical crossover music and yoga. She has recently been trying to live a more sustainable lifestyle to reduce her carbon footprint.
Director of Clinical Research
Michael Gastauer is Director of Clinical Research at the California Institute of Renal Research under Balboa United, a Management Services Organization specializing in medical practices. He is a founding member, former partner and former Head of Pulmonary Research of PCR, Inc., a successful, multi-specialty, multi-center Clinical Research Organization servicing the Inland Empire and Coachella Valley. The field of Research fuels his desire to be present at the frontier of medicine, consistently fueled by innovation and change.
In addition his role at Balboa United Michael enjoys science fiction, loves cinnamon rolls, and listens to classical and techno music, exclusively.
Fabiana believes in service to others. She enjoys helping underserved communities, and it is her passion for this that has fueled her interest in the medical field. Her career started as a Medical Assistant after graduating from Pima Medical Institute. Her natural leadership abilities were evident from the start, and quickly led her to become an Urgent Care supervisor. In 2015, she became part of Balboa Nephrology Medical Group where she currently manages three clinics in the South Bay.
Mayra previously worked as Dr. Bedoya’s medical assistant for over 15 years. Prior to her position as clinics manager, she was a clinical quality coordinator for the busy South Bay clinic.
Mayra believes in making the needs of our patients a priority. She uses her knowledge and past work experience to ensure that the appropriate care is delivered to each and every one of our patients. She has also shown great leadership among her coworkers in assisting and educating them.
Mayra was granted the 2016 Service Excellence Award from Balboa Nephrology Medical Group.
Born and raised in the small farming town of El Centro, California, Michele discovered her passion for the medical field and helping others when her grandmother suffered a stroke. During her time as a care giver to her grandmother she began taking classes at Imperial Valley College for Medical Billing and Coding, Medical Assistant courses and Phlebotomy. Michele then began her career in the medical field working for Kidney Medical Associates as a Medical Assistant and Medical Biller. When KMA merged with Balboa Nephrology Medical Group in 2006 Michele proudly accepted her new role as office manager.
Her love of all things living extends beyond just people. An avid bird watcher and animal lover, she loves spending time on her ranch with her cats and cows. In her free time she enjoys gardening and spending time with her family.

Operations Systems Manager
Sidney Montes is the Care Coordination Project Manager for Balboa United. Prior to working with Balboa United, she worked directly with Balboa Nephrology Medical Group for 5 years. Her career with BNMG began as a Medical Assistant, grew into Care Coordination, ultimately placing her in her current role as Care Coordination Project Manager. Sidney believes that the key to successful care coordination is patient engagement and empowerment.
Sidney also enjoys music, reading, and spending time with her family.
Terri Rice is a Clinics Manager in North San Diego and Riverside counties. She has spent the last 14 years building expertise in the field of nephrology gaining an in-depth knowledge of chronic kidney disease, end stage renal disease, and renal transplant. Terri has continued to apply this knowledge to her current role where she is a complete patient advocate. She works to consistently deliver superior care to every patient with kidney disease. This involves engaging patients, assisting physicians and staff, and delivering all around operational excellence.
Outside of work, Terri spends her time with the joy and adventures of her five daughters and 7 grandchildren.
Director of Human Resources
Director of Revenue Cycle Management
Mark has experience in multiple sectors of revenue cycle; from small practice to large and academic multispecialty medical groups. Mark focuses on driving sustainable improvements using a collaborative and data driven approach. His strategic approach to supporting maximum reimbursement while reducing costs is based on system optimization and process lean engineering.
Mark holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and is Epic certified in resolute billing. He also holds multiple certifications from the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HMFA).
Mark is a native San Diegan and enjoys hiking the trails near his home and spending time with his family.
