How Does Kidney Disease Affect Mental Health?

If you have kidney disease and have experienced feelings of stress, depression and anxiety, you are not alone. We often talk about the effect kidney disease has on the body but living with kidney disease (whether you have chronic kidney disease (CKD), are on dialysis, have a transplant or care for someone with kidney disease) can be mentally challenging. Our friends at the American Kidney Fund have put together an amazing page of mental health resource information and you can find it here.

Kidney Conversations with ReMend

It’s important people have the resources they need when dealing with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end stage renal disease (ESRD). It can be helpful talking to someone who has been in your situation. Kidney Conversations with ReMend is tailored to people on their kidney journey with topics patients are interested in discussing in a casual, setting.

On May 27th, ReMend’s Co-Founder and retired CEO & Medical Director for BNMG, Dr. Steven Steinberg and Cindy Polis, Balboa Nephrology Medical Group’s Education Nurse and ReMend Mentors hosted another candid, lively discussion. The focus was Living Donation with special guests Christine Prewitt, Director, Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program and Tammy Wright, Transplant Coordinator both from Sharp Healthcare. Clinical Trials Day

Clinical Trials Day is May 20, 2021 and recognizes the people who conduct clinical trials and to say “thanks” for what they do every day to improve public health. Big shout out to our team at California Institute of Renal Research (CIRR)! Thank you for all you do!

Clinical Trials Day is celebrated around the world in May to recognize the day that James Lind started what is often considered the first randomized clinical trial aboard a ship on May 20, 1747.  Read the full story here.

Managing Stress

A diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) can create feelings of anxiety, disbelief or denial. The first step to managing mental health issues is to acknowledge the way you feel. The good news is that you don’t have to do it alone. Talk to your care team. They can refer you to a counselor or a therapist who can help you. Find tips to help manage stress from our friends at Fresenius Kidney Care.

May is National Military Appreciation Month

Balboa Nephrology Medical Group proudly supports National Military Appreciate Month. Declared by Congress in 1999, May was selected National Military Appreciation Month as a month-long observance honoring the sacrifices of the United States Armed Forces. There are more military related observances during the month of May than any other month, so it is an appropriate time to celebrate the men and women in uniform.

During May, we recognize Loyalty Day, VE Day (the end of World War II in Europe on May 8, 1945), Armed Forces Day, Military Spouses Day and Memorial Day. For more information, visit

Balboa Nephrology Medical Group Launches New MSO Balboa United

SAN DIEGO, January 1, 2018 – Balboa Nephrology Medical Group launched Balboa United, a full-service medical practice management services organization. Balboa United offers a wide range of services from billing and collections to centralized insurance authorizations and clinical operations management to human resources. The company takes away the burden of operating the medical practice, so physicians can focus on quality care and the patient experience.

“The paradigm of healthcare is changing” said Dylan Steer, MD, CEO of Balboa United. “Balboa United will help free up time for physicians to deliver a superior experience of care for their patients. The administrative burden of running a practice leads to physician burnout and is one of the least rewarding activities for busy clinicians. We hope that management by Balboa United will improve the lives of both patients and physicians alike.”

Balboa United was built by physicians, so we have the expertise to understand the needs of the physician.
